Care Enough to Chart!

Be the best dressed Precision Teacher at your next chart share,
or just around the neighborhood.

Behavior Research Company apparently has lots of these vintage shirts available for sale, and at the price, it's an excellent deal. I wore one of these during the latest ABA International Annual Convention and not only was it in great shape for being a real 1977 vintage tee (If I didn't know how old these shirts are, I really wouldn't have a clue to the age), but I received many, many compliments. One apt question was, "Where's the charted data?". Good point--the charts are to scale, so you could chart--front and back.

The drift is that because of old school sizing you should consider buying these larger than your usual size. FWIW, a man's L in these shirts seems to be equivalent to a current women's size medium (8-10).

ANNOUNCE: Apps. due 6/5/09--OAR Graduate Research Grant Program

Organization for Autism Research (OAR)

GRADUATE RESEARCH GRANT PROGRAM
Proposals due June 5, 2009

OAR invites research proposals for its 6th Annual Graduate Research Grant Program. Through this competition, OAR intends to promote research in:

• The analysis, evaluation, or comparison of assessment models, treatment models, or service systems
• Applied aspects of early intervention and/or school-based education, behavioral, or communication intervention,
• Adult issues such as continuing education, employment, housing models and “later intervention,” or
• Issues related to family support, social and community integration, and assessment and intervention with challenging behavior.

OAR seeks to fund studies that will likely produce practical and clearly objective results that may aid parents, families, professionals, and people with autism to make more fully informed choices that will lead to healthier and happier lives.

Please note that OAR will only make grant awards for research that will begin during the grant period (September 1, 2009-December 31, 2010).

ANNOUNCE: New book by Abigail B. Calkin

This is a shameless plug for a newly authored book by Abigail B. Calkin, Ph.D., Performance Enhancement Training: Change your thoughts, feelings, and urges. This is the first of a projected series of books to "change your thoughts, feelings, and urges", and this title in particular focusses on "...military personnel and others with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), this book focuses on increasing positive thoughts and feelings within a person...".

This latest book is available from Behavior Research Company.

Abigail was a student of Eric Haughton and Ogden Lindsley, the major early figures in the field of Precision Teaching; her unique specialty within the field is the counting and charting of "inners", that is the covert behaviors of thoughts, feelings, and urges, with an eye to improving these "inners" and consequently a person's attitude towards him/herself and life. Her first experiment in the counting and charting of these "inners" and how doing so changed her life, is recounted in, "A Minute a Day Makes Good Feelings Grow". Since that time the study of "inners" has continued to be her particular interest.

More about Abigail, her interests, and her writing (in fiction and poetry, as well as in science) can be found at her website.

Recently Rick Kubina interviewed Abigail on his Precision Teaching Podcast program. The interview is a fascinating account of the early days of Precision Teaching as well as her own narrative of her career and interests.
